EUROVISION RECOVERED

For the month of September and on into early October, "All Kinds Of Everything" is running a list of some of the best or most unusual cover versions of Eurovision songs ever recorded. Some of these will be familiar, and in some cases perhaps more famous than the original versions, while most will be quite obscure. The aim is to allow you to listen to familiar songs in unfamiliar settings. There will be a new song to listen to every day, with a little background to the cover version and the original. I'd like to thank everyone who suggested songs for this countdown.

 "Rapsodia" (Italy 1992)

Performed at Eurovision by Mia Martini

Covered by Alex Panayi & Matheson Bayley

"Rapsodia" may not have been one of Italy's most successful Eurovision entries, finishing 4th in 1992, behind Ireland's "Why Me?", but it is certainly a fan favourite based on various internet polls. Mia Martini was one of Italy's biggest music stars of the 1980s and had previously sung at Eurovision in London in 1977 finishing 13th with "Libera". Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment near Milan.

Alex Panayi is a familiar face and voice at the Eurovision Song Contest. In 1995 he sang his own song "Sti Fotia" as the Cypriot entry and in 2002 he repeated the achievement with "Nomiza". He has also provided backing vocals for several entries including "My Number One", Greece's winner in 2005. British musician, arranger and producer Matheson Bayley has recorded two collections of rather unusual cover versions of Eurovision songs, one of which features Alex as vocalist, from that 2004 album "Native Hue" comes this simple but charming cover of "Rapsodia".
