EUROVISION 2007

As well as the four finals, tonight sees nine other shows in the Eurovision selection process, seven semi-finals, one singer qualifier in Spain and a regular qualifier in Lithuania. Below you can find information on these shows, in the order in which they start.

FINLAND

2007 Eurovision host broadcaster YLE gets the night started, with the third of four semi-finals starting at 17.00 GMT. So far the Finnish shows seem to have disappointed most people, given that most countries put huge effort int the Eurovision Song Contest, when staging the event. There has been no shortage of effort by YLE, and the programmees have been undoubtedly entertaining, but somehow the songs are lacking in the "wow factor". However this is the week that could all change. AS with the first two semi-finals, three acts each perform two songs with the public selecting their favourite to go forward to the final in two weeks' time

The Finnish show is webcast, and is worth tuning into for the rather unusual news section alone. I will be putting a link onto the front page just before the webcast begins. You can find out more about the Finnish selection on YLE's website. The Finnish Final which will select the host country's entry will be held on February 17th at the Caribia hall in Turku and will be hosted by Heikki Paasonen & Jaana Pelkonen.

Saturday night's line-up:
1 Olet uneni kaunein (You're my most beautiful dream) Johanna Kurkela
2 Merry-go-round Kentala
3 Anyone anymore Lovex
4 Jossain metsäin takana (Somewhere behind the forests) Johanna Kurkela
5 Left my heart behind Kentala
6 Wild and violent Lovex

UPDATE : While  this was certainly a very varied selection of songs, and may have thrown up two serious contenders for Helsinki in May, we're still waiting for the first Finnish entry that screams "winner" in the same way that Lordi did last year.

Johanna Kurkela's dreamy ballad has a beautiful melody and very teatrical staging while Lovex's (right) own song "Anyone Anymore" gained 84% of the vote and must be the favourite to qualify.

ROMANIA

From Finland, we move due south to Bucharest at 18.10, to catch up with the second Romanian semi-final. Following the Top 5 finish of "Tornero" in Athens, the eventual Romanian entry will automatically qualify for the final. Twelve songs will participate in each semi-final, with the top six qualifying for the final. The voting will be a 50/50 mix of televoting and a jury. The Romanian final will be held on February 10th and will be hosted by 3 Sud-Est & Catalin Maruta.  Romanian television has put an excellent website together and you can watch videos of the song.

So far, Romania has had the best selection of entries, although the selection has not been without its fair share of problems, with onee act being throw out for being un-co-operative, an accusation of plagiarism over another, and third entry may have been performed before the Eurovision rules allow. The show is webcast, and one can only hope that the long-winded presenter seen in the first semi-final, has now understood that people tune in to hear the songs and not listen to him.

Saturday's night's line-up:
1 În lumea mea (In my world) Moni-K
2 Dracula, my love Simplu & Andra
3 Nu pot sa uit (I can’t forget) Tibi Scobiola
4 Love is all you need Nico
5 Soapte (Whispers) Celia
6 You and me Ada
7 Do the tango with me Wassabi
8 European - a beautiful sin Desperado & Tony Poptamas
9 Time Ionut Ungureanu - Provincialii
10 Deci 20 (Therefore 20) Trupa Veche
11 No podre vivir (I won't be able to live) Marcel Pavel

UPDATE : Marcel Pavel (right) is among a male dominated group of finalists (highlighted above) after a very long show. Rumour has it that  Trupa Veche won this semi-final, but the voting is unlikely to be made public

BULGARIA

Bulgaria's selection process also begins tonight, with a semi-final qualifier. The Bulgarian Final will be held on February 24th at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, with the winner being chosen by televoting. The top nine songs in the semi-final, chosen by televoting will progress to the final where they will be joined by three others that have been specially commissioned for the selection.

This show begins at 18.40 and while Bulgarian television has put a website together, you need to know your Cyrillic alphabet to get around. There are however nice pictures and soundfiles to give you a taster of what is in store. It is believed, but not certain that there will be a webcast, but as this show is up against the finals in Estonia, Slovenia and Poland, that may be academic to most people.

Saturday night's line-up:
1 If you come baby Svetozar Christov & Lora Vladova
2 Say you would Toni Dimitrova & Goresch Pyask
3 Runaway Petya
4 Back in your heart Grupata

14 Moya ljubov Margarita Hranova
15 Open your eyes Charlene & Natasha
16 One way back home Dimitar Atanasov
17 Dokoga (How long) Krum
18 In expectance Galin Raichev

UPDATE : There was disappointment for the Irish/Swedish/Maltese team behind "Open Your Eyes" which didn't make it through, but better news for Sofi Marinova & Ustata (right) who did get through to the final selection on February 24th.

SWEDEN

If Balkan hip-hop or Slovenian punk isn't to your taste, then your might like the Eurovision staple diet being provided in Sweden. This year's Swedish Final will be held on March 10th at the Globen in Stockholm, and will be hosted by Kristian Luuk, who is also hosting the semi-finals. Before that final there will be five semi-finals. The first four semis will have eight songs, with the top two songs progressing to the final and the 3rd-4th placed songs going forward to the fifth semi-final where they will have a second chance to qualify for Stockholm.

Swedish television hasn't broadcast the semi-finals on the net in recent years, but this year they will apparently be streaming the show live from the Kinnarps Arena in Jönköping. The show begins at 19.00 and I will be putting a link to the radio stream on the front page, just before it begins. You can see more about tonight's semi-finalists and check out their songs on SVT's website

Saturday night's line-up:
1 Money Elin Lanto
2 Anything but you Andersson & Gibson
3 Samba sambero Anna Book
4 Clubbin' Addis Black Widow

6 Jag tror på människan (I believe in mankind) Tommy Nilsson
7 Hypnotized Sofia Berntson
8 God morgon (Good morning) Uno Svenningsson & Irma Schultz Keller

UPDATE : In a result that can only be descibed as everything that's laughably predidictable about Swedish selections, veterens Anna Book and Tommy Nilsson took the two automatic places in the final with Elin Lanto and Udo & Irma getting a second chance.

LITHUANIA

Lithuania will have its second qualifier and having achieved its best ever Eurovision result in Athens in 2006, when the unforgetable "We Are The Winners" by LT United finished in the Top 10, the eventual 2007 Lithuanian entry which will be chosen on March 3rd goes straight to the final. Before that, there are three qualifiers dived by newcomers, semi-established acts, and well known performers ands two semi-finals. Lithuanian television has opened up an excellent website for the selection. The show begins at 19.00 GMT and we should know the result around 21.00 GMT.

Saturday night's line-up:
1 The green sun Ashtrey
2 At your door U-Soul
3 Something about love Edita & Erika
4 Wherever I go Edita
5 The fall Natas
6 Just leave Stringaj
7 It was good to be with you Žydre
8 Buk arti (Stay beside me) Helada
9 Breaking free Nerri
10 Let's pray Ingrida Paukštyte
11 There's no matter Igors
12 PiaR (Public Relations) Super Kolegos
13 Bad salad ballad Mesa

UPDATE : With so much else happening elsewhere, few people got to see this qualifier, but by all accounts it was a convincing win for Natas and "The Fall". Bad news for Stringaj (right) who missed out.

NORWAY

The second of three of Norwegian semi-finals took place last Saturday and it will be a surprise if the Norwegian flag in Helsinki is not flown by (and covered in ) Dusty Cowshit. This week NRK's Melodi Grand Prix circus moves to the town of Stokke i Vestfold and once again six songs will be performed with the top two qualifying for the final, while the 3rd and 4th placed songs will go forward to the 4th semi-final where they will have a second chance to qualify for the final. The Norwegian final will be held next Saturday (10th) at the Spektrum in Oslo, hosted by Synnøve Svabø & Stian Barsnes Simonsen and eight songs will compete. You can find out more about the artists (if you speak Norwegian) and listen to the songs on NRK's website. One again, there will be a webcast and I will provide a link before the show begins.

Saturday night's line-up:
1 Rocket ride Jannicke Abrahamsen
2 Maybe Trine Rein feat. Andreas Ljones
3 Creator Monica Hjelle
4 Wannabe Crash!
5 Here Christina Undhjem
6 Vil du ha svar (Do you want the answer) Jenny Jenssen

UPDATE : There's a bit of variety from the non-stop novalty song that progressed to the Norwegian final with Jenny's pop and the more roick flavoured Cras!. Jannicke Abrahamsen (right) and vetern Trine Rein get a second chance nect week.

LATVIA

This Saturday also sees the second of two semi-finals in Latvia. Once again ten songs will take part and the top five chosen by a 50/50 mix of televoting and jury, will qualify for the final where the winner will be chosen by televoting alone. The Latvian Final will be held on February 24th in Ventspils.

With a mix of pop, rock and opera-lite, this is is a varied semi-final line-ups anywhere in Europe, and you can hear snippets of the competing songs and a phote gallery of the entrants on LTV's website. This show will not be broadcast on the web.

9 My vow to you Klaidonis & Linita
10 Always and forever Elli U

UPDATE : The semi-classical Boniparti.lv (right) qualified to give them a good shot at the ticket to Helsinki. A surprise in the show when Geir Ronning (Finland 2005) joined "The legends of rock'n'roll" team and qualified.

ICELAND

It's the third of three Icelandic semi-finals and and after a lacklustre first semi, and an excellent second show last week, it would appear that we're in for something in-between this week. The top three songs in each semi (chosen by televoting) will qualify for the final and nine songs will compete in the Icelandic final to be held in Reyjkavik on February 17th, and will be hosted by Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir, with the winner again being chosen by televoting. As with the other semis all of thee songs will be performed in Icelandic during the selection process, but the winner will almost certainly be translated to English for the Eurovision Song Contest. You can find out more about the Icelandic selection and listen to the songs in advance of the show on RUV's website.

Saturday night's line-up:
1 Örlagadís (Goddess of Fortune) Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir

UPDATE : THree more qualifiers and after the past couple of weeks it's good to see the gender balance being corrected somewhat, with two female singers getting through.

SPAIN

Finally tonight, Spain has its fourth singers gala in the complicated "Mision eurovision" process. The show starts at 21.30 and you can find information on the singers involved on TVE's oifficial website.
