SEVERINA

"Moja štikla" (My Stilettos) (listen here

33 year old Severina Vučković was born in Split and has been one of Croatia's biggest pop stars over the last decade. Since releasing her debut eponymous album in 1991, she has gone on to release nine others and has had a string of major hits, many of which were performed successfully at music festivals in the former Yugoslav republics.  This isn't Severina's first attempt to get to Eurovision. In 2000 she finished 8th in Croatia's Dora (their Eurovision selection show) with the catchy song "Daj Mi Daj" which many people felt would have given Croatia their best ever Eurovision result. In 2004, she became infamous for a videotape which leaked on the internet showing her having sex with a business tycoon who was at a time a married man and father of three children. At the time this was devastating to Severina's public image in conservative Croatia, as she had been a symbol for religious modesty, promoting abstinence in many of her public appearances. Now having put that unsavoury incident behind her, Severina has returned and enlisted the songwriting talents of Boris Novkovic (singer and songwriter of Croatia's 2005 Eurovision entry). ""Moja štikla" is an instantly appealing ethnic flavoured dance song and if it makes it to Athens could continue the trend of recent Eurovision winners. Croatia selects its entry on March 4th.

MIHAI

"Tornero"(I Will Return)(listen here

The Romanian public has a habit of eventually rewarding people who make persistent efforts to get to Eurovision. Last year it was Luminita Anghel, who made it on her 5th attempt and if that trend continues this evening, "Tornero" will be chosen as Romania's entry for Athens. Mihai Traistariu came 2nd in the 2000 Romanian Final, 4th in 2002, equal 3rd in 2003 (as part of the group Valahia), took part in the 2004 Romanian Semi-Finals (under the name of Adonis) and came 3rd in 2005.  Over the past few years the 25 year old who hails from Constanta on Romania's Black Sea coast has built up quite a fan club and released his debut album in 2004. "Tornero" has a structure similar to "Let Me Try" from 2005, with a subdued beginning, then a dramatic kick and a key change that could not have been more obviously signposted.

THOMAS ANDERS

"Songs That Live Forever" (listen here)

I have already sneak peeked two of the three songs in contention for the right to represent Germany in Athens and here is the third. The name Thomas Anders may not be instantly recognizable, but if you mention Modern Talking then anyone who knows about European pop music over the past twenty years will be familiar with the singer of "Songs That Live Forever". Thomas was the lead singer of the duo who scored a series of million selling hits in the 1980s and 1990s, and are best known on this side of Europe for the 1986 hit "Brother Louie". Thomas's cohort in Modern Talking, Dieter Bohlem wrote most of the duo's hits, but now Thomas has branched out on his own with a song which is quite different from most of his previous repertoire. "Songs That Live Forever" is a classic pop ballad with a huge chorus and with Thomas's warm and familiar voice to sing it, I would make this the slight favourite to get to Eurovision and disappointment those that want to see Vicky Leandros back in the contest in Athens. The German public  will choose its entry on March 9th.
