QUEENTASTIC

"Absolutely Fabulous"

This Friday evening will see the second semi-final in Norway's Melodi  Grand Prix. Among the six acts in contention for the two places in the final, are a drag queen duo Queentastic and the song "Absolutely Fabulous". Queentastic was formed just under a year ago and consists of Geir Lillejord and Dean Erik Andersen. Geir had had his own television show in Norway and is a popular actor and drag show artist. For Dean Erik Andersen is a newcomer. Their song is apparently a celebration of the popular BBC comedy series of the 1990s and the lyrics were composed by Gerard James Borg, who has been involved in several entries from his native Malta including "7th Wonder" which finished 2nd in the Eurovision Song Contest in Tallinn in 2002. A drag act would be nothing new to Eurovision, that 2002 show featured the trio Sestre from Slovenia and two years ago the Swedish drag act After Dark finished 3rd in their countries national selection with the song "La Dolce Vita". For Queentastic the glamourous road to Athens starts in Bodo on Friday night. We'll wait and see how far they actually get.

Antanas

ANTANAS NEDZINSKAS

"Pop Zvaigzde" (Pop Star)

Lithuanian Antanas Nedzinskas is a singer that's already beginning to build a bizarre cult following on the internet. Last Saturday he took part in the "Eurovision Studio" talent search and despite his microphone breaking down and being joined on stage by a interloper from from the audience, he still managed to qualify for the next round of Lithuania's long winded Eurovision selection. It's probably fair to say that 23 year old Antanas, doesn't take himself too seriously and his song includes lyrics like "I’m a pop star, fame is awaiting me, millions of fans, rich sponsors, contracts, producers, and the others are losers". Should Antanas defy the odds and make it to Athens, he could well be this year's Alf Poier.

HA-DWA-O

"Popatrz Na Mnie"  (Look At Me)

I've now heard all the songs which will be competing in the Polish national final later this month and I must say that they are a very good selection indeed. While I think Ich Troje must start as favourites to get the return ticket to Eurovision, my personal favourite is "Popatrz Na Mnie" by the Ha-Dwa-O. The duo which consists of guitarist Tomka Konfederaka and singer Weronika Korthals came 3rd in the Polish national final (co-incidentally won by Ich Troje) in 2003 and have a string of successful albums, released over the past six years. This year's entry is an instantly catchy pop song driven by a lovely slide guitar and might just cause an upset come January 28th. You can find more on Ha-Dwa-O on their website here.
